Tiger 1 shot off lead despite security guard scare

Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau share Masters lead after first round

Woods posted a two-under 70 in the first round to put himself square in the mix of things and charged up to within one of the lead on Friday.

Day is tied for the lead at seven under alongside countryman Adam Scott (68), as well as fellow major winners Brooks Koepka (71), Louis Oosthuizen (66) and Francesco Molinari (67).

Woods finished tied for sixth at The Open, where Molinari won, and was second at the PGA Championship, where Koepka won his third major.

Day has admitted to trying too hard in previous years at the major he wants the most, and says a back injury could be a positive.

He hit his tee ball to 7 feet on the par-3 fourth and sank the putt for his first birdie of the round. He answered with three birdies on the next four holes, including a shot into the 16th that stopped inches from the cup.

Brooks Koepka of the USA hits off the 4th tee during second round play. To shoot under par today considering some of the breaks I got and some of the shots I hit, and I'm right there.

'I've got to go and have a MRI soon, but I can't see that making any difference, it's not really changed for the last 30 years'. McIlroy played the par 5s in even - two bogeys, one par and an eagle on No. 8 that got him under par, but only briefly.

His weight loss coincided with an equally noticeable drop in form that saw the 28-year-old slip into a pre-Masters slump, missing the cut at the Arnold Palmer and finishing outside the top 55 at both the Players Championship and WGC Dell Match Play.

He holed out from behind the green at No. 12, picked up birdies on the par fives and rolled in a bending 20-footer in between on the 14th.

The only scare for Woods came on the 14th hole, when his drive went well left into the trees.

Scott, the 2013 Masters victor, surged up the leaderboard thanks in no small part to a spectacular eagle at the 15th.

He two-putted for birdie on the par-5 15th.

Koepka, who had shared a one-shot overnight lead, also deserved applause, staging a back nine recovery after a stumbling start to the second round.

"I don't know if it's my attitude", Koepka said, when asked about turning into something of a specialist in the majors.
