Tottenham's Kane could return for England's Nations League matches

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min

The club gave no timetable for his return.

Spurs said on Thursday that tests on Kane's injured ankle have shown "a significant lateral ligament injury to his left ankle".

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says Harry Kane will discover next week whether he will miss the rest of the season when he sees a specialist about his ankle injury.

Spurs have also said England midfielder Dele Alli, 23, fractured his left hand during the same match.

"He was so upset after the game - it was a hard moment for him", he added.

England face the Netherlands in their Nations League semifinal on June 6, the day after hosts Portugal play Switzerland, with the final set for June 9 in Porto.

Kane's absence could have huge ramifications for Spurs' season.

The second leg of their Champions League tie against City is on Wednesday, 17 April at Etihad Stadium.

Kane had previously missed six weeks of action after injuring the same ankle during a January 15 Premier League match against Manchester United.

'Our first interest now is to try and provide Harry with the best conditions and tools to recover as soon as possible and hope he can be fit as soon as possible and help us at the end of the season and help national team to win the title they're going to fight for in the summer.

He was ruled out for nearly two months in January, missing seven games, when he damaged ligaments in the same ankle during their 1-0 Premier League home defeat by Manchester United.

Pochettino undoubtedly possesses other capable goalscorers in his squad but it is clear that not being able to call on Kane during the run-in equates to a huge blow, with Fernando Llorente the Argentine manager's only other option at centre forward. He joined from Swansea City knowing full well that he would be playing second fiddle to Harry Kane, and that is exactly how it has panned out.
