Facebook's latest mishap involves freaky messages printed on Oculus controllers

Oculus Touch

The messages on the final production hardware, which will actually be hidden inside the controllers, also include "The Masons Were Here, ' while some developer kits limited to non-consumer units shipped with messages like 'Hi iFixit!"

A Facebook spokesperson told the Verge that the easter eggs were hidden on the Touch controllers for the yet-to-be-released Oculus Rift S and Oculus Quest, not the original Oculus Touch controllers that shipped in 2016.

That much was once again made clear today when the social media giant was forced to admit it had "accidentally" shipped "tens of thousands" of Oculus Touch controllers with secret messages embedded inside the devices.

Facebook said it accidentally hid freaky and "inappropriate" messages inside "tens of thousands" of virtual-reality controllers, including "Big Brother is Watching" and "The Masons Were Here".

While the vast majority of Oculus owners will never take apart their controllers and find the messages, news of the hidden content will nearly certainly raise eyebrows given Facebook's already tarnished public image.

However, it seems Oculus noticed the easter eggs had been incorporated into the consumer hardware before it could remove them.

Hidden inside the Touch controllers are messages like, "This Space For Rent", and "The Masons Were Here". According to Mitchell, the specific products at issue are Touch controllers for the Quest and Rift S that haven't yet shipped, compared to the current Touch controllers that have already begun shipping with the Rift. "That said, as mentioned in Nate's tweet, the messages will be inside tens of thousands of controller pairs that will ship to consumers when Quest and Rift S ship". These messages are only printed on components inside the controllers, so users won't see them unless they decide to crack open the hardware. "We think it's important to be transparent with our community and take responsibility when there's an error".

To some, jokes like "Big Brother is watching" are in poor taste considering the public relations woes of Oculus parent company, Facebook.
