Ozzie Albies Signs Extension With Atlanta Braves

Ozzie Albies Signs Extension With Atlanta Braves

All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies and the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a $35 million, seven-year contract, a deal that includes team options for 2026 and '27.

Ozzie Albies will be remaining in Atlanta for the foreseeable future. He debuted in 2017 as a 20-year-old, and became the youngest Braves player to hit a homer since fellow Curaçao native OF Andruw Jones in 1997.

Though in fairness to the Braves and Albies, Ozzie is yet to prove himself fully and did have some struggles for the latter half of last season.

He would have been eligible for arbitration after the 2020 season and for free agency after the 2023 season.

Last season, Albies hit.261/.305/.452, with 24 home runs, in 684 plate appearances.

In an era of record breaking contracts and massive deals, the Braves will be keeping each player through a part of their prime for a bargain. Albies was named to the 2018 National All-star team alongside the Braves other star rookie, Ronald Acuña Jr. The options are for $7 million each with $4-million buyouts, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Though signing their own talent is great Atlanta still has holes on their roster and will have to continue to make moves if they hope to be true contenders in 2019.

That players like Albies and Acuna are choosing to sign extensions well before they hit the free agency market shows a growing trend around baseball.

Ozzie and Acuna will be Atlanta Braves for years to come, a fact that has many fans excited. "And I took (the deal) because I want my family to be safe".

The 2019 version of Albies has gotten off to a good start as well in the first few weeks as he is hitting.364 and playing good defense.
