Brexit: Jeremy Hunt says 'absolute priority' to avoid European polls

Ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage launches Brexit Party

The Sunday Telegraph says an analysis of polls suggests Mr Corbyn is heading for No10 after Theresa May failed to deliver on her promise to take Britain out of the European Union by March 29.

Asked if it could be a disaster for the Tories, he told the BBC "in terms of polling it certainly looks that way".

"Then we would hope to take stock of where we are as soon as parliament gets back after the Easter recess", he said.

Last week, the European Union agreed a new Brexit deadline of 31 October.

The two parties have set up a series of working groups in key areas, such as environmental standards, security and workers' rights, to try and find common ground. "They are more detailed and more constructive than people had been expecting on both sides".

He said that if the talks break down, the Government will return to the House of Commons for further votes.

"What the prime minister has to do now is aim everything towards departure before the euros (European elections) which would then allow her to step away having done what she said she would do - get the United Kingdom out of the European Union one way or the other", he told Sky News.

"What the Prime Minister has to do is aim everything now towards departure before the European elections which would then allow her to step away having done what she said she would do, getting the United Kingdom out of the European Union one way or the other and then we can have another leadership election and pick a new leader", he told Sky.

While Japan and other major foreign investors were keen for the United Kingdom to "make up its mind" about Brexit, he suggested they would continue to keep faith with the United Kingdom even if it left without a deal.

"Many countries in the European Union, their vision for the European Union is they would like one day Europe to become one country like the United States of America and they think that Europe will become stronger that way", Mr Hunt said.

The foreign secretary, along with his predecessor Boris Johnson, are among a long list of potential candidates touted to succeed Mrs May when she stands down.

"We don't comment on staffing matters".

The foreign secretary - a fluent Japanese speaker - also addressed the pupils in their native tongue as he made the official visit to the country.
