Child injured at Mall of America 'continuing to fight his courageous battle'

Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts

"(From) our investigative work and witnesses that we've spoken to - we feel confident saying the suspect threw the child off the third floor", Potts said Saturday.

"Earlier today, Mall of America security was notified of an incident involving a child falling from one of the upper floors".

In a statement Friday afternoon, the mall's management acknowledged the incident.

He's now at the Bloomington Police Department, Potts said, and authorities don't believe there is any further threat to the public.

The child sustained life-threatening injuries in the incident and was treated by witnesses and emergency services at the scene before being rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Police do not think there is a relationship between Aranda and the child, but the Minneapolis resident has a history with the police, including a July 2015 incident where he threw an object from one of the floors at the same mall.

Friends of the family began a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign for Landen, who is described as "the sweetest, kindest 5-year-old you will ever meet".

On Friday, April 12, witnesses heard a woman screaming that her child was being thrown off a balcony.

Potts said he expects to turn the case over to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office on Monday for a decision on formal charges.

It happened at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota shortly after 10am local time on Friday.

The Mall of America issued a statement on Friday, saying: "This was a senseless act and words can not truly express our profound shock and sadness".

Aranda lives in the Bloomington area and has had a series of arrests and convictions related to the mall.

According to court records, the suspect has been previously barred from the Mall of America.

Chief Potts said the suspect had three run-ins with Bloomington officers back in 2015, but had not had any contact since.

He was convicted of fifth-degree assault, trespassing and interfering with a police officer. He had also swept his hand across a display table at the beauty store Bare Minerals, breaking lip gloss containers and shot glasses, police said.

He was accused three months later of throwing glasses of ice water and tea at a woman in a restaurant at the mall after she refused to buy him food, the records show.

Aranda was under a trespass notice at the time banning him from the mall until July 4, 2016.
