White House Looking at Sending Migrants to Sanctuary Cities

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin testifies before a House Financial Services Committee hearing on the

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders defended Trump earlier Sunday, saying the president has a duty to highlight Omar's history of making comments that others deem anti-Semitic or otherwise offensive and that he wished no "ill will" upon the first-term lawmaker.

"Nobody thinks that this is the ideal solution", Sanders told Fox News Sunday, spinning the idea as a bipartisan win.

Trump broke with a decades-old precedent by refusing to release his returns as a presidential candidate in 2016 and continues to do so as president, saying his tax returns are under IRS audit.

Schaaf was responding to a tweet by Trump Saturday afternoon when the US president seemed to mock Schaaf's earlier statement accusing Trump of planning to send undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities.

An idea floated by President Donald Trump to send immigrants from the border to "sanctuary cities" to exact revenge on Democratic foes could end up doing the migrants a favor by placing them in locations that make it easier to put down roots and stay in the country.

This article was written by Kayla Epstein, a reporter for The Washington Post.

Trump said on Friday he was considering sending illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities, prompting USA mayors to accept such an offer as the battle over border security rages.

Prominent Democrats including Beto O'Rourke, Kamala Harris and Omar's fellow first-time Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have rushed to Omar's defense, accusing the president and other Republicans of deliberately taking her remarks out of context and endangering her life.

The Department of Homeland Security has said that Congress has not appropriated any money to transport the migrants from the border to far-flung sanctuary cities across the US, while the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency has called it an "unnecessary operational burden".

Neal said his agency was consulting with the Justice Department to determine whether the request for Mr. Trump's tax returns is legal and constitutional.

"They do these watered down push-backs that, frankly, they feel like give them enough cover, but aren't really getting the job done", Sanders said.

Trump on Friday tweeted a video that juxtaposed the snippet, to a backdrop of menacing music, with images of the destruction wrought by the hijacked planes slamming into the Twin Towers, which once dominated New York's skyline. "We have people working on it diligently".

Whether or not the IRS has to release President Donald Trump's tax returns remains "far from clear", according to at least one tax policy expert.

Trump's controversial tweets over immigrants have drawn backfire from some sanctuary cities in the Bay Area.

And despite the consideration given to releasing the immigrants on the streets to sanctuary cities, the Trump administration actually has plenty of jail space to detain families. After being rebuked last month, including by Democrats, she apologised and said she was "listening and learning".
