Zach Johnson knocks ball off tee with practice swing at the Masters

Zach Johnson

It was a lucky escape for the former Masters champion, as the rules take into account intention to make a legitimate stroke.

American Zach Johnson accidentally struck his ball during a practice swing on the 13th tee in the second round of the Masters on Friday, producing the kind of cringe-worthy moment every golfer dreads. So Johnson re-teed and found the fairway. Only that's exactly what Johnson did when he made a practice swing, hitting his ball with the toe of the driver, which caused it to ricochet off the tee marker and bounce a few yards forward.

After 13 holes of play, Johnson now sits at one-under for the day and one-over for the tournament.

"I can't think of a time I've done it - not on goal", Johnson said of hitting the ball during a practice swing.

Fortunately for Johnson, who won the 2007 edition of the tournament, he did not incur a penalty as it was a clear accident. "I don't think I could do it again if I tried".

"That's something we're going to laugh about for a long time", said Matt Kuchar, who was playing with Johnson and Ian Poulter. "I thought I'd done it all, but now I know I have".

But because Johnson had yet to tee off, the ball was not technically in play when he made his swing, meaning the ruling came down to his intent.

And then there was a stand-up comedy routine - two, actually - after Kisner and Johnson completed their rounds, Kisner finishing off a 1-over-par 73 to sit at 2 under entering the weekend, and Johnson also shooting a 73 and sitting at 3 over after two rounds.
