INTENSE: Climate Change Activists Glue Themselves To London Street Furniture

These are central London landmarks protesters are targeting as part of efforts to demand the Government declares a climate emergency. They thereby imposed a deadweight cost on business and an inconvenience to commuters.

Extinction Rebellion said the protests across London were just some of dozens planned across the world, calling for governments to introduce stricter measures to tackle climate change.

The demonstration, which XR describes as non-violent civil disobedience, comes on the back of similar action in November that saw thousands of protesters occupy five bridges in central London.

Activists said they smashed the glass of a revolving door and caused more than 6,000 pounds ($7,900) worth of damage.

Among a total of 113 arrests, five people were detained on suspicion of criminal damage at Shell's headquarters.

Protesters then gathered outside Oxford Circus Tube station around a bright pink boat, where some used makeshift devices to lock their arms together.

He said: "People are frustrated and angry but if we don't stop climate change there will be a complete breakdown of society".

The ongoing demonstrations comes as part of attempts to force the Government to declare a climate emergency.

Extinction Rebellion said: "The worldwide rebellion begins and Extinction Rebellion will be bringing London to a standstill for up to two weeks". One Shell spokesman told CNN: "We respect the right of everyone to express their point of view, we ask only that they do so with their safety and the safety of others in mind".

The International Rebellion is meant to force governments to agree to Extinction Rebellion's demands.

"We've got 12 years to act before there is irreversible damage to the environment and we start to see catastrophic changes".

While organisers encouraged people to set up camp in Hyde Park overnight into today, they were warned they could be breaking the law by doing so under Royal Parks legislation.

On Tuesday, the Metropolitan police said it had arrested 113 protesters overnight but demonstrators said all four sites remained under their control.
