Another case of measles reported in the Mount

A group of Brooklyn parents has sued the city Health Department to stop an emergency order aimed at slowing an outbreak of measles.

They are concentrated in New York, New Jersey, California, Michigan and Washington, and officials have said the infection is proliferating among people who are not vaccinated. It kills around 100,000 people, mostly children, every year.

The fight over vaccinations, which the global and national health communities note are necessary to help spread the potentially deadly disease, is a personal one for some. Violators could face a fine of $1,000.

It also prevents measles, which the CDC estimated in 2014 would have caused an additional 21 million hospital visits and 732,000 deaths among children born in the past 20 years were it not for the success of the Vaccines for Children program launched in 1994. People who received this form of the vaccine, or were vaccinated before 1968 and don't know what vaccine type they got, should be revaccinated with the current "live attenuated" form of the vaccine, the CDC says.

All told, there are now 20 states where outbreaks have been confirmed, bringing the case total to 555 cases as of April 11, the CDC reports.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in the Brooklyn Supreme Court by Orthodox Jewish families, came mere hours before an Orthodox daycare center in Williamsburg was shut down after failing to allow health officials to inspect its medical records.

USA measles cases have surged again, and are on pace to set a record for most illnesses in 25 years.

The WHO also estimates only one in 10 cases are reported, and that's just an average, which varies by region. If the outbreaks aren't brought under control, public health experts worry that the cases in 2019 will hit a record almost two decades after measles's "elimination" in the United States.

The city's Department of Health did not respond to requests for comment. Those steps include declaring public health emergencies, banning the unvaccinated from schools and public places, and mandating vaccinations.

Another case of measles has been reported in the Bay of Plenty region. Health officials have since said the recent uptick in nationwide measles outbreaks was due to misinformation spread from the anti-vaccination movement. NSW has had 35 cases since Christmas and Queensland has seen 12 confirmed cases this year.

A state judge overturned the order, but Rockland is appealing that decision.

Rockland officials doubled-down on their efforts Tuesday, April 16, issuing two new orders.

Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot said the outbreak was driven by a small group of "anti-vaxxers" who were "spreading risky misinformation based on fake science". The other order cracks down on students who don't have their immunization or exemptions properly documented.
