Uber, Lyft drivers plan to strike in cities across the U.S.

Uber's hotly anticipated stock market launch is expected to be one of the biggest IPOs in history

Driver's from Uber competitor Lyft, which staged its own public stock launch last month, are also participating in the labor actions, which are mostly focused in large US metro areas, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington and Boston. Average hourly pay for drivers, the analysis found, hovers around $9.21 after Lyft and Uber take their cuts (20% and 25%, respectively) and drivers pay for maintenance and gas.

Hundreds of Uber drivers in Britain are to go on strike as part of an worldwide protest against pay and conditions on the eve of the ride-hailing app's stock market flotation.

As the Washington Post reported, authorities in major cities are preparing for significant travel disruptions at airports due to the strike, which will include a rally outside Uber's San Francisco headquarters and demonstrations at regional offices nationwide.

To be sure, many drivers from Uber are still earning more than they could get in other blue-collar jobs in India.

"We do see added risk from Uber aiming to take greater share of the fare from drivers and expect that the more Uber pushes here, the more drivers will fight back and protest, increasing the likelihood of regulations (particularly at the state level in the U.S. and in Europe) of minimum wage guarantees", Ives said in a research note.

One of the former Uber executives told Reuters the company should have taken more care as drivers were its most important stakeholder.

"Both Uber and Lyft have said that the greatest threat to their investors is driver dissatisfaction".

NY drivers are demandingan end to sudden account deactivations and the right to appeal through the courts.

In December, judges dismissed Uber's latest appeal against a landmark employment tribunal ruling that its drivers should be classed as workers. But now, through a partnership with Lyft, more riders can experience self-driving.

Uber issued a statement through a spokesperson, saying: "Drivers are at the heart of our service - we can't succeed without them - and thousands of people come into work at Uber every day focused on how to make their experience better, on and off the road". A driver in New Delhi showed his Uber app that said he had received an $84 (roughly Rs. 5,800) reward, while another in the city, Arvind Kumar, received $165 (roughly Rs. 11,500). "Uber and Lyft wrote in their S1 filings that they think they pay drivers too much already". They have also devised more complicated formulas for determining what riders pay and what drivers earn.

While drivers have tried to formally unionize, independent contractors aren't covered by the same organizing protections as employees when it comes to labor laws.

"Uber and Lyft are unlikely to increase drivers' minimum wage to $28 simply because of the May 8 strike", Beebe said. "Uber is the worst actor in the gig economy".

"The companies may offer to increase drivers' pay on a one-time bonus basis or in small increments, but remember, although Uber is a tech unicorn, it is still deep in red, losing over $1 billion in 2018", Beebe said.

Uber's valuation could be as high as $91 billion when trading begins, which would place it among the top three most valuable firms to ever debut on a USA exchange.

Lyft is the second-largest ride-hailing service behind Uber - set to make its own stock market debut this week.
