AMD and Cray announce the Frontier supercomputer - CPU

The world's fastest supercomputer will be built by supercomputer manufacturer Cray and chip designer AMD to accelerate innovation in science and technology in the U.S., the U.S. Department of Energy announced on Tuesday.

The Frontier supercomputer will be capable of completing more than 1.5 quintillion calculations per second, and will join Aurora to become the second of the two exascale systems planned by US DoE for 2021. "Cray's Shasta supercomputers are created to support leading edge processor technologies and high-performance storage, all tightly interconnected by Cray's new Slingshot network".

Officials anticipate the supercomputer will debut in 2021 as the world's most powerful computer with a performance of greater than 1.5 exaflops.

Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory plan to use Frontier's HPC and AI capabilities to "simulate, model and advance understanding of the interactions underlying the science of weather, sub-atomic structures, genomics and physics, and more", according to the Department of Energy.

Frontier will also have greater processing power than Aurora, which will be able to carry out a quintillion operations each second.

Tennessee-based ORNL is home to several of the world's top supercomputers, including reigning champion Summit, which now sits at No. 1 in the world, with a performance of 143.5 petaflops.

AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), a high-performance computing company announced that it is developing the world's fastest computer. Coincidentally, Aurora too has been developed by DOE along with Intel and Cray Inc. A custom high-bandwidth, low-latency Infinity Fabric will connect four AMD Radeon Instinct GPUs to one AMD Epyc CPU per node.

Enhanced, open ROCm programming environment for AMD CPUs and GPUs support.

"Today's announcement represents the power of collaboration between private industry and public research institutions to deliver groundbreaking innovations that scientists can use to solve some of the world's biggest problems", said Lisa Su, president and CEO at AMD. Summit, which uses IBM CPUs and Nvidia GPUs, is now the most powerful supercomputer in the world, according to the latest Top500 rankings.
