Palestinian fishermen held off Gaza Strip coast

Michael Rice

A week after the most violent escalation of violence in five years, Israel has opened the border crossings to the Gaza strip.

Of the 23 Palestinians identified as being killed in last weekend's violent flare-up in the Gaza Strip, at least 17.

Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian on Friday during weekly protests along the border with Israel, Gaza health officials said.

The Committee chose to disengage with Israel and redefine the relationship with it through the elimination of agreements and the embodiment of the Palestinian state under occupation.

The developments came after a week that saw violent clashes along the Israel-Gaza border which remained closed for the Memorial Day and Independence Day holidays from May 7 to 9, The Times of Israel reported.

Gazans have held weekly rallies since March 2018, primarily to draw worldwide attention to the dire living conditions.

The protests that began on March 30, 2018, demand that Palestinian refugees have the right to return to their homes from which they were expelled during the founding of Israel and for a complete lifting of the 12-year Israeli blockade of Gaza.

The speeches by United States envoy for worldwide negotiations Jason Greenblatt and top Palestinian diplomat Riad Malki at an informal Security Council meeting were on much broader issues than the chosen topic - Israeli settlements at the "core" of the "obstruction of peace".

Reportedly, Egypt and Qatar have mediated this truce. The contest will draw thousands of foreign visitors to Tel Aviv. Israeli officials lifted safety measures following the ceasefire offer.

"When the U.S., prior to announcing its plan, recognises Jerusalem as the so-called "capital of Israel" and claims they are entitled to take such a sovereign decision that is in blatant violation of global law and UN Security Council resolutions and pretend it has no implications on peace, it is not possible to have faith in such efforts", Maliki said.
