Felicity Huffman Weeps as She Pleads Guilty in College Admissions Scandal

Felicity Huffman pleaded guilty to a felony nearly exactly a month after Lori Loughlin pled not guilty for her involvement in the same scandal: Operation Varsity Blues, which has been dominating the news for months.

The Oscar nominated, Emmy winning actress cried in court as she admitted paying $15,000 to fraudulently improve her daughter's exam grades.

After the exam, Riddell corrected her answers, giving her a score of 1420-an improvement of 400 points from her PSAT, which the affidavit said she took a year earlier, without Riddell.

Twenty people so far have agreed to plead guilty since officials carried out a wave of arrests under the code name "Operation Varsity Blues" on March 12.

Huffman officially pled guilty on Monday, but she's been careful to take ownership of her blame and cooperate from the start. According to the The Los Angeles Times, prosecutors will recommend a sentence at the low end of guidelines that call for four to 10 months in prison based on Huffman's plea deal and federal sentencing guidelines, but Huffman's attorneys have a right to argue for an even lower sentence.

Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 13 at 2:30 p.m.

"I had no knowledge of Mr. Singer paying (others)", Huffman said Monday before crying. Nor was Huffman's husband and Sophia's father, William H. Macy, despite the fact he had correspondence with Singer.

Rosen also said Huffman scored "multiple concessions" from the government, including avoiding prosecution for money laundering.

Several parents have already pleaded guilty, including Gordon Caplan and Bruce and Davina Isackson.

Huffman issued a statement last month saying she is "in full acceptance of my guilt, and with deep regret and shame over what I have done, accept full responsibility for my actions and I will accept the consequences that stem from those actions". A judge will have the final say on what sentence Huffman actually receives.

Huffman, 56, is among 14 parents who have agreed to plead guilty to charges in the case. Huffman paid Singer $15,000 to have a proctor correct her older daughter's SAT answers and considered going through with the plan for her younger daughter before deciding not to, authorities say.

Parents still fighting the charges include fellow actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli.

Businessman Devin Sloane, who was accused of paying US$250,000 for his son to be admitted as a water polo recruit at the University of Southern California, also pleaded guilty on Monday.
