Jeremy Kyle Show cancelled by ITV

Jeremy Kyle Show cancelled by ITV

The Jeremy Kyle Show has been axed permanently by ITV after a participant died following an appearance on the show.

Mr Dymond took a lie-detector test to convince fiancee Jane Callaghan he had not been unfaithful but they split after he failed, according to The Sun.

Carolyn McCall, ITV's chief executive, said: "Given the gravity of recent events we have chose to end production of The Jeremy Kyle Show".

That future has been decided and will see the end of the show, which has been a fixture of ITV daytime programming for 14 years.

Rachel Roberts, 31, from Dereham, went on The Jeremy Kyle show in 2016 as a last ditch attempt to get the father of her daughter to give up drugs.

It faced fierce criticism about its style and levels of aftercare in the wake of the news, with the United Kingdom prime minister's office calling the case "deeply concerning".

Following the news, fans of the morning talk show have criticised the broadcaster for double standards, with money-spinning dating series Love Island remaining on air in spite of the suicides of former contestants Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon.

Hampshire Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and a file was being prepared for the coroner.

On Tuesday, Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright said it was a "deeply concerning case" as he called for broadcasters and production companies to have "appropriate levels of support in place".

A spokesman for the Ofcom broadcasting watchdog said Mr Dymond's death was "very distressing".

Dymond apparently took a lie-detector test for the episode, filmed on May 2, in order to prove to Callaghan that he had not cheated on her.

Tory MP Simon Hart, who also sits on the committee, described the Jeremy Kyle Show as "car-crash TV which revels in people's awful misfortune and sometimes their vulnerabilities".

Since the news broke of Mr Dymond's death, Folkestone and Hythe MP Damian Collins also called for an "urgent review" into how TV shows protect the welfare of reality show guests. "An inquest is likely to be opened into the death within the next few days".

Monday morning's episode of The Jeremy Kyle Show did not air and ITV has now wiped all episodes of the programme from its on-demand service, the ITV Hub.

The broadcaster added: "The previously announced review of the episode of the show is under way and will continue".

Asked if there were particular shows that there were concerns about, he cited "Love Island".

The presenter is yet to personally comment on the show's cancellation.
