We already knew Disney had signed the pair up for a Star Wars adventure. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting". Just last week, Disney announced their upcoming slated releases, where we learned that the first post-Skywalker-saga Star Wars film will be released on December 18, 2022, nearly three years to the date after The Rise of Skywalker.

The company confirmed that the next films would be released at two-year intervals in December of 2022, 2024, and 2026, but there was no word on whether those films would be from Benioff and Weiss or from Johnson.

We've known for a while that Benioff and Weiss would step into the world of Star Wars, but this the first confirmation we have that theirs will be the next film to make it to the big screen.

Now the latest sees Disney CEO Bob Iger confirming that the next Star Wars movie is from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, basically stopping short of calling it a new trilogy and that Rian Johnson's isn't happening.

'We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie we release will be theirs. "So we're not doing nothing". Not only did the teaser promise the return of fan-favorite Star Wars villain Darth Sidious, but it also revealed the official title for the movie: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

'Now we're not going to wait until [Episode] 9 is released and then start figuring it out. It's amusing that Iger is basically like, "we have so much money, sure, we'll probably make another Star War".

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.

In addition to Iron Man director Jon Favreau's new Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian and the one starring Rogue One actor Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, a third Star Wars TV program for Disney+ is in the works.
