The new Apple TV app available in over 100 countries

Apple's redesigned TV app which will be home to the TV+ service is launching now for Apple TV iOS and Samsung SmartTVs

Hot on the heels of Apple's own release of updates to iOS and tvOS that include the company's new TV app, Samsung has announced that it too is launching the TV app today.

The app is bringing the Apple-curated viewing experience to non-Apple devices for the first time, debuting today on Samsung smart TVs, with other smart TV brands as well as Roku and Amazon Fire also in the future plans. While the presence of channels, iTunes content, and the forthcoming Apple TV+ are no surprise, what's missing is any reference to the other content now offered by the app on tvOS and iOS.

In the USA the service will offer access to Starz, Smithsonian Channel, Epix, Tastemade and new services like MTV Hits.

There are also dedicated kids and sports sections. With this new Apple TV Channels interface, users will be able to directly add their paid streaming services directly into the Apple-design UI, including fan favorites like Showtime and Starz.

Along with India, US, Canada, Nepal, select African as well as Middle Eastern countries are also getting Apple's TV app. Apple TV+, the company's subscription service for original content, is coming later this year. And so far only three pay TV providers are supported in the Apple TV app - Charter Communications Inc's Spectrum, AT&T Inc's DirecTV Now and Sony's Playstation Vue. More will be added over time, including CBS All-Access and Smithsonian Channel. Apple is reportedly asking for a 30% cut on all subscribers who sign up for third-party services through the TV app.

Also starting on May 13, through AirPlay 2-enabled Samsung Smart TVs, customers can seamlessly play videos and other content from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac directly to their Samsung Smart TV. See our disclosure policy for more details. In an update that appeared alongside macOS 10.14.5, Apple has released iTunes Device Support Update, a 108.3 MB download that supposedly "ensures proper updating and restoring for iOS devices using iTunes for Mac".
