UEFA To Seek Champions League Ban For Manchester City

Brighton vs Man City Highlights

Liverpool lost out to City in the Premier League title race on Sunday, as a 4-1 win at Brighton earned Pep Guardiola's side back-to-back titles.

Manchester City have previously paid a £49 million ($63.4 million) fine in 2014 for a similar breach, but as per a report by the New York Times, the sanctions could include a European ban this time around.

Aside from a brief statement confirming the investigation was underway, UEFA has so far been silent on the matter, but a report from the New York Times on Monday claims that the verdict has been reached, and City are facing a ban from Champions League football if UEFA take its recommendations into consideration.

Manchester City's triumphant Premier League title celebrations have been punctured somewhat after news emerged that UEFA were seeking to ban the club from next season's Champions League.

City were among a handful of teams targeted in media leaks towards the back end of a year ago, including other European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. It is alleged that money was funnelled into the club by a United Arab Emirates based investment company, which bypassed FFP rules by inflating the terms of sponsorship agreements.

Since Sheik Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan became the controlling owner of the club, Manchester City has been viewed as one of the world's richest clubs and has won four of the last eight Premier League titles. Manchester City would also have the right to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

However, City have long claimed "the attempt to damage the club's reputation is organised and clear" and said they "will not be providing any comment on out-of-context materials purportedly hacked or stolen from City Football Group and Man City personnel and associated people".

It is also yet unknown as to whether or not the ban would be for the upcoming season or the 2020/21 campaign should it be upheld.

A City spokesperson said: "The song in question, which has been a regular chant during the 2018-19 season, refers to the 2018 UEFA Champions League final in Kiev".
