UK: Theresa May to bring Brexit deal back to lawmakers in June

Prime minister Theresa May's Conservative Party is in a slump among voters a poll says

May will bring a Withdrawal Agreement Bill, which implements the departure terms, in the week beginning June 3 - the same date that U.S. President Donald Trump begins a state visit to Britain at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth.

She also held face-to-face talks with Jeremy Corbyn in her Commons office on Tuesday night to warn him that time was running out for him to agree a cross-party Brexit deal.

Cross-party talks between the Government and Labour will continue despite Tory opposition to Jeremy Corbyn's key demand.

Almost three years after the United Kingdom voted 52 per cent to 48 per cent to leave the European Union, there is still no agreement among politicians about when, how or even if the divorce will take place.

A spokesman said Theresa May had made clear the government's "determination to bring the talks to a conclusion and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU".

"We will, therefore, be bringing forward the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in the week beginning the 3rd June".

May was seeking a "stable majority in Parliament that will ensure the safe passage of the Withdrawal Agreement Bill and the UK's swift exit from the EU", the spokesman said.

Ministers spent more than two hours discussing the Brexit situation and despite the apparent lack of progress in talks with Labour decided the process should continue, but with a clear view that "we need to get a move on".

Brexit supporters in May's divided Conservative party said her deal was as dead as her crisis-riven three-year premiership.

Junior Education Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan said in her resignation letter that it was now clear to her that "the negotiations have been built on the United Kingdom trying to appease the European Union and we have allowed ourselves to be led into a deal which is unacceptable to the 17.4 million voters who asked for us to step away from the European Union project and become an independent nation once again".

"No leader can bind his or her successor so the deal would likely be at best temporary, at worst illusory", said the letter.

"We haven't seen the significant shift yet that we require to be able to support a deal", Labour's second most powerful man, finance chief John McDonnell, said on Tuesday.

For the past six weeks, ministers and their Labour counterparts have been discussing how Parliament might accept the agreement May struck with the European Union (EU) previous year. May has been urged by senior members of her own party to abandon the talks.

Signatories include potential leadership contenders Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab.

The statement came after talks between May and Opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn on a possible compromise that would end a deadlock on Brexit in Parliament.

"We believe that a customs union-based deal with Labour will very likely lose the support of Conservative MPs", the letter said.
