United States does 'not seek a war with Iran': Pompeo

Pompeo crashes Brussels meeting of EU diplomats for Iran talks

During a press conference with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Putin shared his thoughts on the Mueller probe.

"I've formed the impression that your president wants to fix Russia-U.S. ties and contacts and wants to solve issues which are of common interest for us", Putin told Pompeo.

"We are ready to do that if our USA colleagues are ready to reciprocate.

If the Russians were engaged in that in 2020, it would put our relationship in an even worse place than it has been", said Pompeo.

"We heard statements by President Trump that he expected to hold a meeting with President Putin including during the G20 summit in Osaka". Trump has also beefed up the US military presence in the Gulf to pressure Iran.

US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Tuesday said his country is not seeking war with Iran, despite a spike in tensions that has seen the Pentagon dispatch nuclear-capable bombers to the region.

Pompeo said that he and Putin agreed on ways to move ahead with a long-delayed Syrian-led committee that will rewrite the constitution in hopes of a political end to the conflict.

At least one, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, said he feared that unintentional escalation from the U.S. and Iran could spark a conflict - an unusually bold statement that appeared to assign equal culpability to Washington and Tehran.

The Russian President Vladimir Putin has said a balance of power is needed in Afghanistan as the positions of Taliban are getting stronger.

It's a unusual comment, to say the least, considering that Mueller did establish that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election to benefit Trump.

They also discussed North Korea, which both want to see give up its nuclear weapons. "As for our policy, it's been consistent now for the entire Trump administration and the decision to withdraw from the JCPOA (Iran nuclear deal), now just over a year ago, made clear what our objectives are", Pompeo said of his stopover in Brussels en route to Sochi.

Pompeo spoke of "truly overlapping interests" that the two countries "can build on, and most importantly, President Trump very much wants to do that".

Pompeo agreed that there are matters of mutual interest between the USA and Russian Federation, where both countries can work together productively.

Last week, Washington announced the deployment of an aircraft carrier battle group and a bomber task force to the Persian Gulf to counter what USA officials called "clear indications" of Iranian threats to the interests of the United States or its allies in the region.

Russian Foreign Minister Serguei Lavrov has rejected USA threats against the Venezuelan government and said it has nothing to do with democracy.

"On Venezuela, we have disagreement", Pompeo said.

Pompeo and Lavrov have in the past weeks called on the other's country to get out of crisis-wracked Venezuela.

Washington past year pulled out of a nuclear deal backed by Europe, Russia and China, which curbed Iran's nuclear ambitions in return for sanctions relief. He also said the two sides disagree on Venezuela and urged Russian Federation to end its support for President Nicolas Maduro.
