Alaska floatplanes collided at 3300 feet before crashing

Alaska plane crash: 2 floatplanes in Ketchikan midair collision — 5 dead - Daily Star

The United States Coast Guard had earlier said four bodies had been recovered - three from the smaller float plane and one from the larger plane - while 10 survivors were being treated for injuries at a hospital in Ketchikan.

Four bodies were recovered and two people were missing after the float planes carrying cruise ship tourists collided Monday near the southeast Alaska town of Ketchikan, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

One plane was carrying 11 people when it hit the other, which had five people aboard, near Ketchikan, the Associated Press reports.

Transport safety investigators from Anchorage and Washington DC were headed to the crash site on Tuesday morning local time.

The Royal Princess, which can carry up to 3,600 people, was among four city-sized cruise ships in the tiny coastal community on the day.

The planes, featuring pontoons that allow them to land on water, were flying cruise ship passengers on tours of Misty Fjords National Monument in the nearby Tongass National Forest, Princess Cruises said in a statement. In Ketchikan Medical Center, three are in good condition and three have been discharged. The plane had descended to an altitude of 3,200 to 3,300 feet when it collided with the single-engine de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver, as both headed to Ketchikan.

A 37-year-old Richmond woman is among six dead following the midair crash of two sightseeing planes in Alaska Monday.

Ten other people were injured in the collision, he said.

"We are devastated. and our hearts go out to our passengers and their families", it said in a statement.

She said the ship was not leaving as scheduled and there weren't any details as to how the accident will affect the rest of the trip.

The Royal Princess departed Vancouver last Saturday, and was scheduled to arrive in Anchorage, AK on Saturday May 18.

Global Affairs Canada was not immediately able to say whether any Canadians were involved in the crash.

"All of us at Princess Cruises are deeply saddened by this tragic news and we are extending our full support to the investigating authorities as well as the travelling companions of the guests involved", said company spokesman Brian O'Connor in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives and the families of those impacted by today's accident".

Weather in the area where the crash happened Monday included high overcast skies with southeast winds gusting at 14 kilometres per hour.

Ten patients were admitted to PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Mischa Chernick told ABC News.

The NTSB team began investigating on Tuesday and is unlikely to determine the cause during the week it will spend at the scene, NTSB board member Jennifer Homendy told a news conference.
