Jets fire GM Mike Maccagnan, HC Adam Gase named interim GM

Gase is the only head coach in the National Football League now with the general manager title, making him the 20th GM to work in the AFC East after Bill Belichick was as the Patriots head coach hired in 2000.

Jets CEO Christopher Johnson said in a statement he told Maccagnan he was being relieved of his duties in the morning.

The Jets fired Maccagnan on Wednesday and elevated Gase to interim GM. I will start a search for our new General Manager immediately.

ESPN reported that Brian Heimerdinger, the Jets' vice president of player personnel, was also fired as part of the team's front office shake-up.

The soap opera that is the New York Jets has had a hell of an episode today.

Bell signed a four-year, $52.5 million contract with the Jets as a free agent. For what it's worth, Gase later downplayed the reports.

Maccagnan compiled a 24-40 record during his tenure as Jets GM, with the team slumping to 4-12 last season.

A rift reportedly grew between Maccagnan and Gase weeks after the head coach was hired in January. Maccagnan was hired in 2015, days before the franchise hired Gase's predecessor, Todd Bowles.

Vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas has been with the Eagles since 2016, and he's helped executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman run the past three NFL drafts.

One personnel man with Bears ties who won't be joining the Jets: Former Chicago defensive back and associate personnel director Dwayne Joseph, who last week left his post in the Eagles personnel department to become the new Oakland Raiders director of pro scouting.
