Over 830 measles cases confirmed in US in '19

Huang cries as medical assistants secure her legs for a series of vaccines at the International Community Health Services clinic in Seattle

He spoke of parents not seeking medical care for sick kids or intentionally exposing children to the measles virus at "measles parties", and of the spread of misinformation about the vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the latest numbers Monday.

Measles was once common in the United States but gradually became rare after vaccination campaigns that started in the 1960s.

In Washington, meanwhile, an outbreak that was centered in Clark County and sickened more than 70 people - majority young children who were unvaccinated - was declared over late last month.

Miami-Dade County is most-at risk in the state, ranking third in the nation. That's the most since 1994, when 963 were reported for the entire year.

"For the first time since the 1980s, we may expect infant deaths from measles in the USA", said the study's lead author, Sahotra Sarkar, a philosophy and integrative biology professor at UT Austin, in a release.

A new study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases identifies the counties at the highest risk for measles outbreaks according to their analysis.

Overall, Texas has three counties in the top 25, with Harris (No. 9) and Tarrant (No. 12) joining Travis.

There are 498 measles cases in the city, officials said.

A total of 75 new cases were reported in the week ending May 10, among which 41 were reported in New York City and 25 in nearby Rockland County.

Today's measles outbreak in NY is far smaller than the one in the 1990s. Since those outbreaks began, providers in New York City and Rockland County have administered more than 40,000 doses of the MMR vaccine.

Sarkar and his co-authors also warned that measles isn't the only disease poised to reappear after eradication. "And that is why in Washington state, we are against measles", Inslee said at a press conference Friday.

Researchers say they hope the report ultimately serves as an alarm for government officials. "Policymakers must focus on centres of vaccination refusal as well as regions with a lot of passenger inflow from affected countries worldwide if there are even small local pockets of unvaccinated people".
