WHO Gives Out New Recommendations to Decrease Dementia Risk

Smoking was found to be one of the biggest risk factors

"During the last two decades, several studies have shown a relationship between the development of cognitive impairment and dementia with educational attainment, and lifestyle-related risk factors, such as physical inactivity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets and harmful use of alcohol", the report states. According to the United Nations health agency, having a healthy diet, especially a Mediterranean one, maintaining healthy blood pressure, consuming less amount of alcohol, and exercising regularly could help in reducing the risk of the brain condition.

"We need to do everything we can to reduce our risk of dementia", the statement quoted the WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, as saying.

People should eat more fruit, vegetables, fish and nuts and walk for about 25 minutes a day to reduce their risk of dementia, the first global guidance of its kind has concluded. "The scientific evidence gathered for these Guidelines confirm what we have suspected for some time, that what is good for our heart, is also good for our brain", Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of World Health Organization, said in a statement. Every year, 10 million new dementia cases are reported, said a spokesperson for the agency.

The worldwide health body also warned against taking dietary supplements such as vitamins B and E in an effort to combat cognitive decline and dementia. They also hope the guidelines will assist governments and policy makers in their efforts to design programs that encourage healthy lifestyles.

There are almost 10 million new cases every year.

Many health conditions and behaviors affect the odds of developing it, and research suggests that a third of cases are preventable, said Maria Carrillo, chief science officer of the Alzheimer's Association, which has published similar advice.

"Other recommendations have a less strong evidence base but may have evidence that they do not increase risk or harm and can therefore be recommended safely, although their impact on risk is less certain".

It notes that this disease is a major cause of disability and dependency among older people and that it inflicts a heavy economic burden on societies. Carrillo agrees that people should be looking to obtain nutrients through eating whole foods rather than using supplements.

World Health Organization said that iSupport was now being used in eight countries, adding that the organisation will soon facilitate the adoption of the programme by more countries. At the same time, "we do know that there are some risk factor for dementia that we can actually modify", Dr. Neerja Chowdhary of WHO's mental health and substance abuse division, told reporters in Geneva. In its 78-page report, it has advised people to properly manage their dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypertension, and weight to potentially decrease the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
