Farmer uses pocket knife to amputate leg caught in machinery

Kurt Kaser

He says he wants to go back to farming because that's what he's been doing his entire life and he had no plans of stopping now, just because he made a very stupid mistake around the equipment. He was filling grain into a silo and said he forgot the screen covering the auger was still missing. It was the latter that betrayed him and ultimately cost him his leg: Kaser was alone on the farm that day when, in a moment's inattention, his foot got stuck in the corn hopper.

"I never lost consciousness until they put me out in Lincoln when they started operating on me". "I thought, 'How long am I going to stay conscious here?' I didn't know what to expect".

Then, the gruesome solution: "I had my pocket knife in my pocket".

When Kurtis Kaser realized his leg was stuck and being pulled into the machine, he knew he had to act quickly. Growing desperate by the seconds, the farmer said he was left with one option.

'I thought for sure I would pass out, and somehow something told me to keep going, ' he said. He managed to retrieve his pocket knife, which he described as having a 3-to-4-inch blade. The Farmer from the US state of Nebraska may have escaped a painful death, "he would have done the": to amputate his own leg with a pocket knife.

The married dad-of-three spent about a week in the hospital and two weeks recovering at a rehabilitation facility before being released Friday.

Following the DIY surgery, Kaser crawled 150 foot to his house to call 911 before being taken to hospital.

"Adrenaline kicked in so much that I don't know if it hurt or not", he said.

Kaser, who has been a farmer for more than 40 years, is determined to get back to work as soon as he can.

Kaser added that he's trying to make the best of the situation, as "it could have been worse".

"I was in a hurry and didn't pay attention", he said.
