Practicality to the fore in McLaren’s 456kW/630Nm GT long-distance cruiser

McLaren GT

This is it. Following a number of teasers, McLaren has now unveiled the McLaren GT.

The GT's carbon-fibre MonoCell II-T monocoque chassis is shared with the Speedtail, resulting in what McLaren claims is the lightest kerb weight in its segment, at 1530kg.

Built for comfortable cross-country trips and covering long distances instead of shaving miliseconds at the track, the GT is a huge deviation from the usual McLaren recipe.

McLaren has revealed all-new GT which is their fourth model in their Track25 business plan. The new GT, the marque says, is lighter, faster, and more responsive than any other model in this niche segment. With 570-litres of cargo space, it is indeed one of the most practical supercars in existence. Despite this, it sports an all-new body made of carbon and aluminum. That means space for a golf bag or two pairs of 185cm skis, along with other bags. Despite being out of sight, the boot is finished with the same detail you find in the cabin, incorporating a new mixed-material SuperFabric that is both luxurious yet resistant to stains and wear. The vehicle is aimed at a completely new audience for McLaren, one searching for supercar performance at the highest levels of comfort for long-distance journeys.

Lightweight and dynamic, the GT boasts a 612-horsepower turbocharged V8 engine. Between 3000-7250rpm it produces 95 percent of its torque output, or nearly 600Nm, through the seven-speed automatic.

As the McLaren GT weighs just 1,530kg, its V8 can propel it from standstill to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, all the way up to a top speed of 326km/h.

"The new McLaren GT combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a handsome body and true to McLaren's ethos of designing superlight cars with a clear weight advantage over rivals".

For now, though, it's all about this auto - one which, McLaren people tell us, will not come a moment too soon for its buyers. Meanwhile, softer engine mounts reduce vibrations through the cabin. 10-degree approach angle at the front (13-degree with lift engaged) gives it an aggressive stance. That it has been asked about providing more space for luggage, and a more relaxing long-distance driving environment, is not a surprise; McLaren's decision to spin out an additional model family from the concept is. Elsewhere the interior is a recognisable migration of the brand's current architecture (maybe a little too recognisable, given the difference implied by the badging) albeit with some uber high-end touches like the option of an electrochromic glazed panel in lieu of the standard gloss black composite roof and cashmere trim (for the first time in a production car). Entertainment comes by way of a sophisticated infotainment system which sends audio to a 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system with carbon fiber subwoofer and Kevlar midrange speakers.
