Watch the terrifying moment a helicopter crashed into a NY river

Helicopter crash lands on Hudson River in NYC pilot who had no passengers safely makes it to shore

A helicopter pilot is lucky to be alive after his aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing into New York's Hudson River.

Despite the aircraft partially sinking on Wednesday afternoon (local time) the pilot, who was the sole occupant, managed to escape.

There were no other passengers aboard.

The helicopter hit the water around 2:20 p.m., according to the Daily News, and no injuries have been reported.

Fire department officials said that he was pulled from the Hudson River on May 15.

The chopper was on its way to pick up passengers after refuelling.

In 2009, US Airways pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger famously landed an Airbus A320 with 155 people safely on the Hudson River off Manhattan after it struck a flock of geese and lost power.

"Harbor secures a helicopter that fell into the Hudson River moments after taking off from the W 30th Street heliport".

While the pilot luckily survived the crash, New York Fire Department Firefighter Tim O'Neill revealed that the pilot and another heliport worker had suffered "non-life-threatening injuries" caused by debris. The aircraft came down quickly, but it wasn't in freefall.

"The next thing you know, it was out of sight", Raisley said.

A cellphone video of the helicopter going down, taken by a WCBS TV editor, showed it descending into the river about 150 feet (46 meters) from the helipad.

He described his reaction: "Just shock".

As you can see below, onlookers also caught the crash on video so people have been freaking out on Twitter about it.

Traffic was moving at a crawl on a busy road that passes by the scene.
