Walmart's new delivery service will put groceries directly in your fridge

Bernie Sanders confronts Walmart executives at meeting

The nation's largest grocer said Friday that it will be offering the service this fall for more than one million customers in three cities: Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Missouri, and Vero Beach, Florida. Customers place an online grocery order and then select InHome Delivery and a delivery day at checkout.

It's more than the curb service that's already offered by Walmart and other retailers and it goes beyond delivering the goods to your door.

Through in-home delivery service, a Walmart associate acts as a personal shopper and will deliver grocery orders to private homes. Deliveries will be made by employees who've worked at the local store for at least a year. Walmart will also use smart entry technology and a proprietary, wearable camera to access shoppers' homes, the company's head of USA ecommerce, Marc Lore, said, letting customers control access into their home and watch a delivery remotely. They will make the deliveries in Walmart-owned cars. "The system will "[allow] customers to control access into their homes and [give] them the ability to watch the deliveries remotely", so even the most security-conscious can keep an eye on their property. The retailer hasn't yet disclosed how much the delivery service will cost. Walmart declined to give specifics on the technology.

Employees will wear a camera that records their visit into the house. Still, in overall merchandise, Amazon is formidable: Walmart last month announced it would offer free one-day delivery on many items for orders over $35, a move to try to match Amazon's speed.

Stein has been developing Walmart InHome in "stealth mode" under the code name Project Franklin since Walmart acquired his startup company - Wim Yogurt - in 2017 and folded it into Store No. 8 in 2017. The incubator develops companies, such as Jetblack, Walmart's chat-based shopping service in New York City, that help it stay ahead of future shopping trends.

Unattended fridge restocking is only part of the appeal, as Stein and Lore described it in a media briefing on Thursday. Once inside, the delivery person will put away your groceries and let themselves out.
