China mum on plan for Japan meeting with Trump

President Donald Trump said if Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the G20 meeting tariffs would go into effect immediately

Trump said if Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the G-20 meeting, tariffs would go into effect immediately.

The president last month imposed tariffs of up to 25 percent on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods and has threatened to put duties on another $300 billion in Chinese imports. "If they don't get approval, we'll have to think in terms of tariffs or whatever", Mr. Trump said.

"If we had not encountered anything unexpected, we would have become number one in the world by the fourth quarter", Huawei's chief strategist, Shao Yang, said Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Shanghai.

The president said the same strategy will work in the United States trade talks with China.

But fears over a slowing US economy are beginning to set in as investors sit on cash because they are not sure how the trade war will turn out.

Trump's threat about Chinese tariffs came amid growing concern by some business leaders questioning whether he is misusing tariffs - or the threat of imposing them - in ways that could hurt the USA economy.

The foreign ministry spokesperson hinted at further retaliation from China if Trump insists on more tariffs. Putin, who has encountered his own difficulties trying to stabilize the struggling Russian economy, boasted in turn that relations between the two countries had "reached an unprecedented level".

Trump called in to the business news network unexpectedly after an earlier segment in which a U.S. Chamber of Commerce executive criticized Trump for his tariff threats against Mexico.

Trump, in the interview, said he thought that the regime would "make a deal because they're going to have to make a deal". "It was all done because of the tariffs and because of the relationship we have with Mexico", the president told reporters at the White House.

Moore joined radio host Matt Boyle on Saturday, admitting that he was wrong when it came to the president's call to threaten Mexico with tariffs if they didn't take action against massive waves of migrants headed to the USA southern border.

President Trump argued that "something is going on" with the growing power of tech companies, pointing out that the European Union is "suing them all of the time".

An emboldened President Trump said Monday that his tariff threat forced Mexico to strike a border deal, and he vowed that China will be the next target brought to heel by weaponization of access to the USA economy.

"At the G20, at most it will be. some sort of agreement on a path forward, but certainly it's not going to be a definite agreement", Ross told CNBC. They're not going to help improve exports to China. Now "they'll never catch us".

However, as the USA economy shows signs of slowing, more and more economists - and one voting member of the Fed's policy committee - now say the next move will be to cut rates to support growth, possibly this year.

"Global growth appears to be stabilizing and is generally projected to pick up moderately later this year and into 2020", the finance chiefs, including Mnuchin, said in an end-of-meeting communique.
