Barack Obama wishes David Ortiz well after shooting in heartfelt note

Leo Ortiz with other relatives at the hospital where his son Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was hospitalized after being shot in the Dominican Republic

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz was shot in the back in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, police say. Police have said the shooting was not a robbery. The country's attorney general told Ortiz on Monday that the investigation had "advanced considerably", according to Martin Finucane of the Boston Globe, who cited a Spanish report. Salvador then drove a wounded Ortiz to the hospital, telling reporters they had a brief conversation in the auto as he urged the baseball great to stay calm and breathe.

Ortiz made 10 All-Star teams and won three World Series with the Red Sox before retiring in 2016. Authorities are investigating on whether Ortiz was the intended target.

Authorities said Ortiz was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot Ortiz in the back at almost point-blank range around 8:50 p.m. local time at the Dial Bar and Lounge.

Two others also were wounded in the attack.

Kennedy said he had been texting Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, who was in the States with their kids, and that "she expressed her gratitude" for all the support.

The 43-year-old retired athlete was flown to Boston on Monday night for further treatment, arriving in an air ambulance provided by the Red Sox, after doctors in the Dominican Republic removed his gallbladder and part of his intestine. "But I'm so disappointed to know that someone like David, who saved so many lives, can have someone after his life".

Authorities said Ortiz, 43, was ambushed by a man who got off a motorcycle and shot him in the back at almost point-blank range around 8:50 p.m. local time Sunday at the Dial Bar and Lounge.

The second surgery lasted until about 1 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Lopez said, without specifying any details. "Our country is a diamond that we have to take care of and defend fully and hope that things improve".

Jon Lester, another former Red Sox pitcher, wrote that he was in "utter shock" at the shooting.

The club asked fans to observe a moment of reflection shortly before playing the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park and posted on the videoboard: "We send our love to David Ortiz". "Get well soon, Papi".

Obama referenced Ortiz's famous speech at Fenway Park in April 2013 ("This is our f--ing city!") just days after the Boston Marathon bombings that helped unite the city in a time of distress. Today, I want to join many others in wishing him a speedy recovery of his own.
