Bonansea scores twice in Italy's win over Australia

Chloe Logarzo twice nearly headed in as Australia pushed for a second goal, but underdog Italy leveled in the 56th minute when Bonansea pounced as defender Clare Polkinghorne carelessly let the ball run under her feet and into the path of the striker.

Italy hadn't been to the Women's World Cup in 20 years, so it was expected to fall to third in the group behind Australia and Brazil.

"We've got three days now to regroup and look forward to the Brazil game".

Australia went down in the dying minutes of injury time as Italian midfielder Bonansea headed home her second goal of the game to give Italy their dream start to the tournament, and the Matildas plenty to think about.

"Maybe they're a bit less organised (than Australia), but they're physically very strong and aggressive, and we need to play in the same way we did today", she said.

But he added: "We're not going to change our style because we conceded a goal". "We need to be a little bit more fearless and composed on the ball".

"We have made a decision to go the long way about it, the hard way about it", Milicic said.

Bonansea had a goal disallowed for offside in the eighth minute following a Video Assistant Review.

Barbara Bonansea of Juventus scored both of Italy's goals in the second half, with her second coming just seconds before the final whistle.

Australia, quarterfinalists at the last three World Cups, was handed a penalty in the 21st minute when Kerr was tugged to the ground by Sara Gama.

Then came Polkinghorne's 56th-minute blunder, which allowed Italy to equalise. Bonansea took several touches and dribbled into the box.

Substitute Daniela Sabatino put the ball in the net but again, but she was caught by the offside flag.
