People Canceling Trips to Dominican Republic Amid Slew of Deaths

FBI CDC Join Probe Into Mysterious Dominican Republic Deaths

A Baltimore woman said that her son mysteriously died on a vacation in the Dominican Republic in 2018, adding that she chose to speak out after seeing reports of other American tourists dying in resorts under unusual circumstances.

Bell Wallace had been staying at the luxury Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana - where Rojo, 29, and his family had been staying this week. His niece, Chloe Arnold, told Fox News that he became ill after having a drink from the his hotel room's minibar.

Thirty members of the family took off for the Dominican Republic to be in place for Tickenoff's wedding on April 14. Arnold said her uncle was in good health and had just gone skiing in Lake Tahoe a month prior.

Five days later, a Maryland couple was found unresponsive in their rooms at a hotel on the same resort. Miranda Schaup-Werner, a Pennsylvania woman, died nearly four weeks earlier, on May 25, after she had a drink from her minibar at another hotel, the Bahia Principe La Romana. Schaup-Werner died that same day from what authorities said was a heart attack.

"We were having a great time ... and we ended up coming home as a broken family", she told Inside Edition.

Univision reported that Robin Bernstein, the ambassador of the United States to the Dominican Republic, said last week the recent high-profile incidents involving American tourists in the Caribbean island nation - including the assault of a woman at another resort - were isolated cases.

The FBI is now investigating the recent outbreaks.

Worryingly for the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, over 45 of these guests noted that they had been guests at this particular resort. "I think what's happening is something happened to a loved one in the Dominican Republic and now you're hearing about this sudden thing happening at the Bahia Principe and you're going to conflate those", said Murphy. "We want these tests and investigation to be carried out carefully and professionally". "My husband's story needs to be told. something's not right in the Dominican Republic".

"We have so many questions", Arnold said.

"Heart attack" was listed as the cause of death.

The deaths made headlines and first put the spotlight on what now appears to be a yearlong pattern.

The reports of the growing death toll were particularly disturbing to Brooklyn's Awilda Montes, 43, who said she began vomiting blood after drinking soda from her minibar at the Grand Bahia Principe last October - but managed to survive.

Kaylynn Knull said she and her boyfriend enjoyed their vacation until they noticed their room beginning to smell of chemicals.
