United States opens World Cup with record-breaking 13-0 rout of Thailand

United States' Carli Lloyd right celebrates with teammates after Lloyd scored her third goal against Japan during the first half of the FIFA Women's World Cup soccer championship in Vancouver British Columbia

The 13 goals surpassed the record set by Germany during the 2007 World Cup, when they beat Argentina 11-0.

"It is a tournament and goal difference matters so at the end of the day, you can't feel bad for scoring as many goals as possible in whatever game you're playing", US right back Kelley O'Hara said. She still has two games to showcase herself, to get some goals.

"When you get a deluge of goals like that, it's a good feeling". It started with Mewis, who finished a feed from Megan Rapinoe for her first World Cup goal.

Carli Lloyd will be making her fourth appearance in the Women's World Cup; she's only the ninth player in USWNT history to accomplish that. "I am really proud of them". Morgan put her arm around an opponent, who was wiping away tears on the pitch moments after the final whistle. Playing in her third World Cup, she was named player of the match.

It's the first of three matches for the U.S.in the tournament's opening round.

"They were disappointed of course, they meant to make an impression in this first match and they were disappointed", coach Nuengrutai Srathongvian said through a translator. She was the first to get the US on the board, scoring in the 12th minute and then again in the 53rd minute. "Yes they are athletes and they will be resilient".

Who said soccer is a low-scoring sport?

The World Cup comes at a time when female players across the globe are seeking better treatment, conditions and pay.

"She's a quality player and to stay encouraged through this tournament, because she's living out a dream that most girls and women don't get to".

The team's biggest margin of victory was a 14-0 win over the Dominican Republic in a 2012 Olympic qualifier in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Sweden, who defeated Chile 2-0 earlier on Tuesday in Rennes, ousted the U.S.in the teams last meeting in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

After netting four times in six minutes shortly after the restart, they then added six more goals in the last 16 minutes. The match was essentially over just 54 minutes in when the Americans went up 6-0, though it could be argued it was over long before that.
