"We are very sorry"-Boeing division CEO apologizes for 737 Max deaths"

How the new Airbus A321XLR will shake up business travel

Before adding: "We have every confidence in Boeing and expect that the aircraft will make a successful return to service in the coming months having received approval from the regulators".

International Airlines Group, or IAG, parent of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and two low-priced European airlines, made a surprise move Tuesday at the International Paris Air Show, announcing it may buy 200 of Boeing's Max aircraft, worth $24 billion at list prices.

A Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by Ethiopian Airlines went down in clear weather on March 10, just minutes after taking off from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia's capital.

"I'd say we're being open-minded to all the input we get", he said.

IAG is the parent company of Aer Lingus, British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Level and flies more than 113 million passengers a year combined.

If the aviation market continues to soften, Airbus and Boeing could suffer their first disappointing year after more than a decade of solid growth driven in particular by the soaring numbers of people flying in Asia.

A Boeing executive has apologised to the families of those who died in two 737 Max crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia. The Boeing 737 MAX is now grounded, while the Boeing 777X is yet to take its first flight.

The people said the order, if confirmed, could be announced to coincide with the Paris Airshow, which runs through June 23, though officials from the USA airline were not expected to attend the show in person.

Pilots were already anxious about the safety of the model following the October 2018 crash in Indonesia of a Lion Air 737 MAX 8 that killed 189 people.

At the same time, Boeing asserted that that name change is not a top priority.

Aircraft safety, trade wars and geopolitical tensions are causing concern at the Paris Air Show. The amounts are based on list prices, before customary discounts. But it's unclear when that will be, notably for regulators outside the U.S.

"Boeing gets an endorsement at exactly the right moment and this completely shifts the narrative; IAG gets to lock in very good pricing", aerospace consultant Richard Aboulafia said.

Other Boeing executives also stressed the company's focus on safety and condolences to victims' families.

The chief salesman for Airbus says his company already has the technology to fly passenger planes without pilots at all - and is working on winning over regulators and travellers to the idea. Faury said there is strong demand for the plane after unveiling it.

Airbus SE will manufacture a new long-range, single-aisle jetliner, the company announced on Monday, creating an opportunity for carriers in markets where demand for worldwide fights may not be enough to fill traditional wide-body planes.
