Arsenal appoint former midfielder Edu as technical director

Arsenal set to sign St Etienne defender William Saliba

Edu Gaspar has left his role as coordinator with the Brazilian Football Confederation to become the first technical director at former club Arsenal.

"We have a strong squad and some very talented young players with fantastic people at every level".

The Gunners are working to a tight budget this summer and are understandably keen not to commit much of it to a player who will not be part of Emery's squad for the coming season.

Arsenal are looking for reinforcements ahead of the next season, especially in the defense, since underwhelming performances last season has propelled Arsenal to make transformations.

Edu leaves his role as general coordinator to Brazil on a high after they were crowned Copa America champions. Now it is down to Edu to unearth some young gems from South America and elsewhere as Arsenal can not compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Man United to sign superstar players for big money, as things stand.

Arsenal have hired a soccer man to oversee all of the soccer facets of the club.

The 41-year old has previously worked with current Arsenal head coach Unai Emery - Edu's final season at Valencia (2008-09) was under the stewardship of Emery.

That disappointment followed an underwhelming Premier League season where he made only five Premier League starts, with Granit Xhaka frequently favoured in the holding midfield role despite Emery's tendency to rotate his side. Edu will be responsible for coordinating the first-team coaching group, the academy and scouting and recruitment.

Zidane has been given the task of rebuilding his squad, which means off-loading as many players as possible in order to create the world's best squad in club football.
