Japan says space probe landed on asteroid to get soil sample

Japanese probe makes final touchdown on distant asteroid to peek into solar system’s origins

After shooting a bullet into the space rock's surface, the probe collected its first asteroid Ryugu samples, which will also be studied once the Hayabusa-2 heads back to Earth in November or December and lands on our planet in 2020.

Then in April, the probe fired an explosive device called an "impactor" to create a crater on Ryugu's surface and bring up materials that have not been exposed to millennia of weathering. It landed inside that crater on Thursday and collected samples that scientists believe contain valuable data unaffected by space radiation and other environmental factors.

Japan's space agency has announced its space probe Hayabusa2 has successfully landed on the asteroid Ryugu. A similar mission is planned by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration on another asteroid, Bennu. According to the Guardian, members of the team were seen madly clapping and making "V" for victory signs.

"The touchdown is successful", Jaxa spokesman Takayuki Tomobe said.

"We obtained pieces of the history of the solar system".

Project manager Yuichi Tsuda has described the mission as "a space science exploration that is unprecedented for humankind".

Asteroids are essentially leftover building materials from the formation of the Solar System.

Watanabe noted that NASA's in-progress Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer mission also plans to bring samples from an asteroid, named Bennu, back to Earth in 2023.

The initial touchdown on the asteroid was postponed from October a year ago, as JAXA found the surface of the asteroid, which at the time was about 300 million km from Earth and 900 meters in diameter, to be rockier than it first thought and needed more time to ensure the safe landing of the probe.

The spacecraft started its gradual descent to the asteroid on Wednesday.

When it reached a height of 30 metres above the surface of the asteroid, the space probe switched to full autonomous function, using a camera to track a target marker that is had dropped earlier.

The actual landing lasted only a few seconds.

The landing was a challenge for Hayabusa2 because of the risk of getting hit by dust and debris remaining at the crater, Kubota said.

As explained in The Guardian, this latest landing was a delicate procedure having began its descent yesterday (10 July) from a stationary position 20km above the surface of Ryugu.

The scientists at JAXA believe that the asteroid's materials could give information about the origin of life on Earth.

"Everything went perfectly, even better than ideal, as if Hayabusa were reading our minds", he said.

"It is extremely significant to be able to compare soil on the surface and from underground", Watanabe said.
