Justice demanded for teen killed for listening to rap music

A Shadowy Teen Obtained His Throat Slit Over Rap Tune. Activists State It be a Despise Crime

Family members said the teen, Elijah Al-Amin, had gotten off of work about 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday and had spent some time with his girlfriend before stopping at the store.

Adams entered a Circle K store just outside Phoenix on Thursday when he walked up behind Elijah Al-Amin, 17, and allegedly stabbed him on the right side of his neck, police said.

Court filings state that Michael Adams told police he heard the music as he approached a Circle K in Peoria, Arizona, and felt uneasy because he's been attacked before by people who listened to rap, specifically "blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans".

"Michael Adams stabbed 17-year-old Elijah to death, because he didn't like his rap music playing", wrote user Frederick Joseph on Twitter.

Adams told police that Elijah did not provoke the attack, and that he killed the teen because he was listening to rap music and he wanted to be "proactive rather than reactive". Adams who was recently released from prison was arrested in the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old boy found face down by fuel pumps at a metro Phoenix convenience store. "Adams further stated, people who listen to rap music are a threat to him and the community", the statement read, according to CNN. She said Adams was "set up for failure", BET reported.

He told police that he felt threatened by the music, not by Al-Amin.

"You took a helluva kid", he said. Al-Amin had picked up Elijah's sister, who worked near the Subway, earlier that evening.

"I understand what he did was bad", she said, according to the station.

As news of the incident gained traction Monday and #JusticeForElijah trended on social media, many questioned why the killing was not being treated as a hate crime. While at a a gas station in Peoria, Arizona, he was stabbed by Adams around 1:45 a.m. Jordan Davis died on the scene while Dunn has since been sentenced to life without parole.

Numerous people commenting on Twitter said claims about Adams' mental illness should not be used to explain away what they believe was a hate crime. "RIP Elijah. #JusticeForElijah", he tweeted.

The Peoria Police Department did not respond to a request for comment. "It's not completely off the table", Sheffert said.

Adams' attorney, Jacie Cotterell, told the judge at his initial appearance hearing that her client was mentally ill and released without any medication, "no holdover meds, no way to care for himself". This is a failing of the Department of Corrections.

She believes Adams and his defense attorney are "hiding behind mental illness" as a reason behind the murder, which she believes was racially motivated. Many people on Twitter believe Adams should not be viewed as the victim and mental health issues can not always be a means for white extremism to be justified.

The Arizona Department of Corrections says officials never designated Adams as mentally ill. Online records show Adams has had numerous run-ins with police, and ABC15 reported he was released July 2 after being held on previous charges, including aggravated assault.
