Melvin Gordon: 3 Potential trade partners for Los Angeles Chargers

Report: Melvin Gordon to Hold Out, Demand Trade if He Doesn't Receive New Contract

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon plans to hold out of to Los Angeles' training camp and demand a trade if he does not receive a new contract, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Gordon could join an impressive crop of running backs on the open market if he enters free agency in 2020.

Multiple teams will have interest in Gordon, who has established himself as one of the best dual threats in the game.

Gordon, 26, is scheduled to be heading into the last year of his contract, a fifth-year option worth $5.6 million.

For starters, this entire situation is beyond a long shot. The Chargers are Super Bowl hopefuls coming off a season in which they went 12-4 and advanced to the Divisional round of the playoffs.

Some of the NFL's top running backs have been getting big paydays, and unless Melvin Gordon gets one, he's going to cause a huge headache for the Chargers.

That said, it's hard to ignore the price (pun intended) of paying a running back. Here are four teams who might end up landing Gordon if L.A. won't give him a new deal.

The Buccaneers do have Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones but neither is a fraction the competent receiver that Gordon is.

Of the 61 players in National Football League history with over 1,000 touches in their first four seasons, Gordon's 4.82 yards per touch ranks 38th on the list - his big numbers are equal parts his talent and opportunity alike.
