Royal security breach: Intruder breaks into Buckingham Palace while the Queen sleeps

Man, 22, arrested after climbing Buckingham Palace fence at 2am

They added, "The 22-year-old man was arrested at approximately 02:00hrs on Wednesday, 10 July by officers from the Met's Royalty and Specialist Protection Command after he climbed over the front gates at Buckingham Palace".

In line with protocol, the would-be crook knew the Queen was home due to a Union Jack flag flying high above the palace, although it's believed Prince Philip was elsewhere at the time.

"But all this happened just metres away from where the Queen was sleeping inside the palace".

As of now, a police spokesperson said the man, who didn't have any weapons on him, is in the custody of the central London police and is being held on suspicion of trespassing.

The intrusion is a devastating blow to the security operation at the palace, which has been struck by a number of similar incidents.

The 64-year-old double-bassist accepted the award in person at a special audience with the Queen.

The 22-year-old man scaled a fence and was on the loose inside the palace grounds for a few minutes.

Steven Lawlor entered the protected royal site on July 16 and broke poster boards and glass cabinets fixed to metal railings to use as bedding, Westminster Magistrates' Court heard the following month.

However, just hours after the security breach took place all seemed well for the younger royals as both the Cambridge and Sussex families were spotted enjoying a polo match together.

A second man was arrested outside the palace for conspiracy to commit burglary.

Buckingham Palace is yet to comment on the matter.

"The police eventually detained him under the mental health act, but they have to ask some serious questions about how he got on and how he had so long to roam free", the source says.

Michael Fagan broke into the Queen's bedroom at Buckingham Palace in 1982.

"I am grateful for their apology and look forward to a safe walk in the garden in the future".

The Sun understands the Queen was the only senior royal sleeping at the Palace because of the refurbishment work going on.

Fagan spent 10 minutes with the monarch - who, despite lying in bed in her nightie, kept a notoriously cool head throughout the ordeal - before she was rescued by a footman who sounded the alarm.
