Sen. Kamala Harris Clarifies Her Stance on School Busing

Biden Iowa 2020

Biden added later: "The fact of the matter is, that's why I chose here in SC and chose an audience that in fact would be the most likely to have been offended by anything that was said".

The apology came during a speech in which Biden defended himself from mounting criticism from other Democratic presidential candidates, who've begun digging into his almost half-century in public life, including 36 years in the Senate, to which he was first elected in 1972. Booker had called on the former vice president to atone for his remarks.

Harris's campaign team says many of these changes were planned far earlier.

During his weekend in the state, Biden defended his record on racial issues and reminded voters of his ties to former President Barack Obama, whose popularity in SC remains high.

At the recent Democratic debate, Ms. Harris said Mr. Biden had actively worked to oppose busing and that at a certain point, "the federal government must step in".

Asked in Iowa whether she would support federally mandated busing in 2019 to combat de facto segregation that remains in some US school systems, Harris replied, "I think of busing as being in the toolbox of what is available and what can be used for the goal of desegregating America's schools".

On the subject of busing, Biden told voters: "I don't believe a child should have to get on a bus to attend a good school".

Referring to the crowded field of White House hopefuls, the former vice president said: 'I mean, I get all this information about other people's pasts, and what they've done and not done'.

Biden has surged to the top of the Democratic pack arguing that he is best positioned to defeat President Donald Trump because he can build a broad coalition of support. "One debate doesn't kill a candidate, but if there is a second one like that he is in trouble", she said.

Appearances such as the one with Jackson, his one-time rival in the 1988 Democratic presidential primary, will signal whether Harris' attack will chip into his support among African Americans.

The state senator Dick Harpootlian, backing Biden, said he had heard from some voters that they felt Harris's debate attack was "disrespectful". Biden will have to improve his performance to stay in the race, she said.

In South Carolina alone, the program would raise the average teacher's pay by more than $9,000, according to her campaign.

When Sen. Kamala D. Harris arrived in Iowa for the first time since her attention-grabbing debate performance, she did so with a revamped stump speech and nearly double her previous forces in Iowa and New Hampshire, all part of a retooled approach her campaign hopes will ensure her breakout moment fosters lasting momentum. Segregation persists now not necessarily as a function of legislator.

Warren, herself a former public school teacher and law school professor, already had promised she'd nominate a federal education chief with classroom experience.

"I'm sorry we had to go through all this, I'm sorry at one point he tried to shift blame to me".

Booker told the audience the next president should have a track record of helping African-Americans. And by the way, I think Ocasio-Cortez is a brilliant, bright woman, but she won a primary.

For Willis, it may just be that Biden's political time has passed.

"He won't get caught flat-footed again", said Dan Callahan, chairman of the Buchanan County Democratic Party.

Sunday, though, Harris did not speak much on race-related issues and did not mention her confrontation with Biden. "I was vetted by he and 10 serious lawyers he appointed to go back and look at every single thing in my background. and he selected me".
