Family Affair: Bolsonaro Wants Son Eduardo to Become Brazil's Ambassador to US

Bolsonaros and Trump

"Eduardo is a friend of Donald Trump's children, speaks English and Spanish, and has long experience with world affairs. It is not nepotism, I would never do that", Mr Bolsonaro said on a live social media broadcast on Friday.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is now a congressman, met with Foreign Minister Ernesto Araujo on Friday and told reporters that the minister "expressed support" for his nomination.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, arrives for the showing of a documentary on the government of Jair Bolsonaro in Washington, U.S., March 16, 2019. "Eduardo Bolsonaro's nomination for ambassador is unacceptable", tweeted Senate opposition leader Randolfe Rodrigues.

On Thursday, Bolsonaro confirmed that he was considering nominating his son, a federal congressman representing Rio de Janeiro, for the post.

The appointment of a president's son would be unprecedented in the diplomatic history of Brazil, where ambassadors are usually career diplomats, columnist Diogo Schelp wrote. "An worldwide embarrassment", he tweeted.

Mr Bolsonaro uses plenty of of his relatives as reputable advisers.

A 2017 YouTube video shows him standing in front of a Popeyes chicken counter recounting his time in the United States between 2004 and 2005.

Eduardo Bolsonaro also noted that he heads the foreign relations commission in the lower house of Congress.

The far-right Brazilian president, who said his campaign past year was inspired by US President Donald Trump, has made friendly overtures to the American leader and made similar use of family members as official advisers.

Eduardo would have to resign as a congressman if he did take up the position of ambassador. But he questioned how powerful Eduardo Bolsonaro would be able to be there.

Bolsonaro was sworn in on January 1 and has yet to nominate a United States ambassador.

The place of ambassador has been vacant since April.
