Metal Drinking Straw Fatally Impales Woman Through Eye, Brain After Fall

Dorset woman died when she fell onto an eco-friendly metal straw

Elena Struthers-Gardner, a retired jockey, suffered fatal brain injuries in the accident at her home in England, according to USA Today.

Struthers-Gardner's wife, Mandy, found her partner-a former jockey who occasionally collapsed as a result of spinal injuries-lying facedown on the floor, "making unusual gurgling sounds", per the Independent.

Dr David Parham, who carried out her post-mortem examination, said the cause of death was a traumatic brain injury, after the straw pierced "through her left eyelid and left eyeball". "I could see the straw had gone through her left eye".

She was sadly pronounced dead the following day at Southampton General Hospital.

In the wake of the death, Mandy mourned the loss of her wife of four years. She told them it wasn't until she turned her spouse over that she discovered what had happened.

The inquest also heard Mrs Struthers-Gardner had suffered with mobility problems following a horse riding accident at the age of 21.

Eco-friendly metal straws have been all the rage after several U.S. states enacted bans against single-use plastic straws, but a tragedy in the United Kingdom might have some consumers thinking twice.

The metal straw movement looks to cut down on the number of plastic straws that end up in the ocean, where they pose a danger to animals like sea turtles.

The UK alone throws away 8.5 billion plastic straws each year.

According to The Telegraph, the eco-friendly, 10-inch long stainless steel straw entered the 60-year-old's left eye socket and pierced her brain.

Mandy is concerned that people challenged with mobility and children could be injured by the straws.

Mandy Struthers-Gardner and Robin Struthers, Elena's brother, have both called for stronger safety measures to be taken with the now-popular metal straws.

Recording a conclusion of accidental death, assistant coroner Brendan Allen said: 'There is insufficient evidence to explain how Lena came to fall. If someone does fall on one and it's pointed in the wrong direction, serious injury can occur'.

Metal drinking straws have started popping up in stores and restaurants around the world following reports that single-use plastic straws are not only incapable of being recycled due to their small size, but are also especially perilous to sea animals.

In a bid to save the environment, many countries around the world have established a ban on the usage of plastic straws.

"I can't believe this is what it takes for some of you to believe us!" I need straws and use them daily.

"Unfortunately, there are dangers in everything", one woman wrote. "It seems to me these metal straw should not be used with any form of lid that holds them in place".
