Selfie addicts flock to toxic pond because the water is pretty

Instagram users urged to stop taking selfies in toxic Russian pond

But it's not worth trying to show you are better than everyone else as the turquoise lake in Siberia, named on Instagram as the Novosibirsk Maldives, is actually an ash dump full of harmful metal oxides. "You CANNOT swim in the ash dump".

"In the final week, our ash dump of the Novosibirsk TEZ-5 has become the star of social networks", the statement mentioned.

Irina, a local who took photos by the pond last month, told Mashable via Instagram DM that while she didn't detect any odor at the scene, she'd never even consider getting in the water. The water's gorgeous aquamarine hue is in no way natural, but rather the result of "deposits of calcium salts and metal oxides" and completely toxic.

"Yes, the water itself is toxic but we did not swim in it and did not touch it", she said.

The statement also advised visitors the bottom of the lake held the most danger, with the mud so thick it may trap swimmers from being able to get to shore.

The lengthy advisory, however, appears to have done little to quell the flow of visitors, marking the latest example of the lengths to which people will go for the flawless Instagram photo.

People are flocking to a polluted dump site in Russian Federation to take the flawless photo.

Cherenkov said there was no security, and the lake attracts many weekend visitors. "The water tastes a bit sour, looks like chalk". Still, she wrote that she thought the danger was "slightly exaggerated". Warnings have been announced by the Siberian Generating Company regarding the lake's risky amounts of calcium salts and other metal oxides.

"The dump is NOT poisonous: blue gulls do not fly there, and plants do not die".

The rash of Instagrammers flocking to the lake has promoted the Siberian Generating Company to warn that the chemicals inside the lake may cause allergic skin reactions and to avoid swimming at all costs.

The ash is the product of a thermal power station that was built in the 1970s and supplies energy to Novosibirsk, a city of about 1.5 million people, the Guardian reported.

In an aerial photo of the lake uploaded to Russian social media by the company, the power plant's towering red-and-white-striped smokestacks can be seen in the distance spewing dark smoke into the sky.
