Taiwan defends USA arms deal after China sanctions threat

Tsai speaking to media in New York

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also said Friday during a visit to Hungary that his country has "grave concern" about Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's stops in the US ahead and after state visits to the Caribbean.

"Taiwan will never succumb to any threats [from Beijing], now or in the future", Tsai was quoted as saying in a statement from her presidential office. "All difficulties will only strengthen our determination to go out to the global community".

Taiwan's 23 million people have the right to take part in worldwide affairs without "political interference", she said.

The pro-China protesters chanted slogans and fought with Tsai's supporters, while one man was seen being detained and handcuffed by police, media footage of the incident showed. This was Tsai's first trip as president to NY.

Tsai, who is up for re-election in January, has repeatedly called for worldwide support to defend Taiwan's democracy in the face of Chinese threats.

Taiwan doesn't have diplomatic ties with the USA, which gives it military and other support.

While its relations with Taiwan are technically unofficial, the United States is required by law to assist Taiwan in its defense and is its main supplier of arms.

On Monday, the Pentagon said the US State Department had approved the sale of the weapons requested by Taiwan, including 108 General Dynamics Corp M1A2T Abrams tanks and 250 Stinger missiles, which are manufactured by Raytheon.

China said it would sanction United States firms that sell arms to Taiwan.

"We urge the United States to abide by the "one China" principle and ... not allow Tsai Ing-wen's stopover, cease official exchanges with Taiwan and refrain from providing any platform for separatist Taiwan independence forces", Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily briefing.

Wang Yi, during his visit to Hungary, asked the United States to "recognise the gravity of the Taiwan question".

"We urge the U.S. to fully recognize the gravity of the Taiwan question".

It is not the first time that Beijing has threatened sanctions following a planned USA arms sale to Taiwan.

"Or maybe with National Security Adviser John Bolton, who has already held a meeting with Taiwan's national security chief David Lee", he said.

Still, the latest move marks "a significant escalation on the part of the Chinese government" said Steve Tsang, a China-Taiwan relations expert at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. "The 23 million people of Taiwan have a right to participate in global affairs and this right should not be subject to political preconditions".

Taiwan and mainland China have been governed separately since they split amid a civil war in 1949.
