Tottenham outbid Arsenal for Saliba - should the Gunners up their offer

Tottenham Slap In Better Bid Than Arsenal For William Saliba, Spurs Trying To Hijack Deal

Tottenham are reportedly close to beating their north London rivals Arsenal to the signing of William Saliba for £26.9million.

Arsenal have been linked with the St. Etienne defender for a number of weeks, and reports in recent days had suggested that they had come to an agreement with the French side.

The claims from RMC are backed up by the highly respected David Ornstein, with the BBC journalist confirming Spurs "interest" via his twitter account.

However, as reported by RMC Sport, Tottenham are now ahead of Arsenal in the battle to sign the France Under-20 global. Saint-Etienne and Arsenal had agreed a deal, just not payment structure/bonus clauses.

The youngster is expected to continue his development at Saint-Etienne for a further season as the Ligue 1 outfit are demanding a loan to be included in the deal, which could ultimately benefit Tottenham if they were to acquire him.

The Gunners are working with a very small transfer budget despite Unai Emery needing an abundance of new players if he is to turn things around at the Emirates.

The Belgian defender is entering the final 12 months of his current deal and is available for £25m.

But Spurs, who signed Tanguy Ndombele for a club record £53.8m this summer, have submitted a late bid. Tottenham may still lose Toby Alderweireld this summer with Roma interested in signing the Belgium worldwide while Arsenal fear they could start the next season without Laurent Koscielny after he refused to go on the club's pre-season tour this week as he wants to leave.
