United Nations rights body calls for investigation into Philippines' "war on drugs"

Relatives of drugs war victims call for a UN investigation- AFP

The latest UN resolution secured the backing of 18 states in the 47-member council, while 14 nations opposed it and 15 countries abstained.

The Philippines on Thursday, July 11 rejected a United Nations resolution that mandates a "comprehensive" global review of the drug war that has been ongoing since President Rodrigo Duterte took office three years ago.

"This resolution does not represent a triumph of human rights but a travesty of them", Garcia said, adding "there will be consequences".

The resolution called for Philippine government co-operation, "including by facilitating country visits and preventing and refraining from all acts of intimidation or retaliation".

The Human Rights Council voted to approve the investigation in a meeting in Geneva on Thursday.

"Duterte denies involvement in summary executions and taunts human rights defenders with vows to widen the war on illegal drugs, which he says are making the country 'insane'".

"We have our own laws, Constitution and our human rights is perfectly protected by our constitution and by our laws", the PNP Chief told reporters at the sideline of the second anniversary of the PNP-Drug Enforcement Group (DEG) at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. questioned the validity of the resolution since it was "not universally adopted".

The exact number of deaths in Duterte's violent war on drugs can not be verified, but at least 6,000 have died since he launched the campaign upon taking office in mid-2016, in operations the police said suspects were armed and fought back.

Sotto had earlier branded the resolution as "biased" and advised the Philippine government to disregard it.

"The resolution is grotesquely one-sided, outrageously narrow, and maliciously partisan", Panelo said in a lengthy statement issued overnight. Police say they have killed 6,600 who were armed and fought back during attempts to arrest them, but activists say there may have been as many as 27,000 drug-related killings overall.

Since taking office in 2016, the president has waged a campaign against drugs that has killed thousands and been condemned by human rights advocates. There will be consequences: far-reaching ones.

On Monday, Amnesty International urged the United Nations to investigate potential "crimes against humanity" that occurred in the Philippines during Duterte's bloody anti-drug crackdown. Duterte, asked by reporters in Manila whether he would allow access to United Nations officials to investigate, said: 'Let them state their goal and I will review it. Police said they will investigate her killing, CNN affiliate CNN Philippines reported.

Laila Matar of Human Rights Watch criticised his comments.

"Should it proceed impartially, we are certain that its result will only lead to the humiliation of the investigators, as well as of Iceland and the 17 other nations supporting it, since there never have been - nor will there ever be - state-sponsored killings in this part of the world", Panelo said.
