Second Day Of Hong Kong Protests, Activists To Target Mainland Shoppers

Hong Kong government says controversial extradition bill is 'dead'

The head of China's representative office in Hong Kong said Thursday that his government supports the territory's leader remaining in office and called for cooler heads to prevail amid social unrest over a now-shelved extradition bill.

Protesters have targeted the town which is popular with mainland China for the march against a controversial extradition bill that would allow suspects in the territory to be sent to mainland China for court prosecution.

Protesters are also demanding the bill be scrapped entirely, an independent inquiry into police use of tear gas and rubber bullets, an amnesty for those arrested and for the city's unelected leader Carrie Lam to step down.

After issuing a warning, police on Saturday moved forward to disperse the crowd of mostly young protesters who say peaceful demonstrations have failed to bring about change.

Jimmy Sham, convener of the Civil Human Rights Front, which has organised a string of major protests against the extradition bill, said the root problem was Hong Kong's lack of a full democracy. Numerous protesters were residents angry with the vast numbers of "parallel traders" who come across the border from the mainland to buy items like baby formula and diapers for resale at a markup in China to evade import taxes.

Residents also claimed that Chinese visitors have created more litter in the area.

"These days there is really no trust of China, and so the protesters come out", said Jennie Kwan, 73.

"We want to raise awareness in Washington that the United States has to do more now to help Hong Kong become fully democratic", said a resident of the nearby town of Fanling, who was one of five people in Saturday's crowd carrying USA flags. Chief Executive Carrie Lam suspended the bill last month in the face of opposition and this week said it was "dead".

A protester stands on a fence as others make graffiti on the gate of store during a an anti-parallel trading protest in Sheung Shui district in Hong Kong on July 13, 2019.

Some marchers beat drums, while others waved British and American flags, with banners calling for independence for Hong Kong flying from makeshift flagpoles.

In a statement late Saturday police said they deployed force after protesters began arguing with locals and "attempted to charge at police officers when the officers intervened".

Beijing denies interfering in Hong Kong affairs, but many residents worry about what they see as an erosion of those freedoms and a relentless march toward mainland control.
