Huawei plans to dismiss hundreds of employees in the US

Huawei Technologies Co. is planning to cut jobs at its US subsidiary

President Donald Trump's decision in May to blacklist Huawei, one of China's most strategically important companies, has dominated global industry discussions, as it threatens to upend supply chains and disrupt the global rollout of fifth-generation technology-an infrastructure spending spree worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

That concession came as part of a truce reached by Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G-20 Summit in Japan last month to restart trade talks and avoid further escalation for now. Licenses could be issued where there is no threat to national security.

Out of $70 billion that Huawei spent shopping for parts in 2018, some $11 billion went to US companies together with Qualcomm (QCOM.O), Intel (INTC.O) and Micron Know-how (MU.O).

Some positive news that came from over the weekend from Reuters reporting that the USA may approve licenses for companies to re-start new sales to Huawei in as little as two weeks should help to restore some faith into the trade talks this week.

In response to the United States restricting Huawei from certain infrastructure and software that it needs for its products through the USA blacklist, China has placed U.S. companies on its own "unreliable entities" list.

Separately, Huawei has shut down its U.S. sales of solar inverters, Roth Capital Partners said in a research note in June. But they have also reiterated that Huawei remains on the entity list, and relief would be temporary. Some U.S. suppliers sought readability at a convention the Commerce Division held in Washington this week.

One person told the WSJ that employees in the USA have been given the option to return home and stay working with the company.

When requested concerning the steerage from the senior official, a Commerce Division spokesman mentioned the company is "presently evaluating all licenses and figuring out what's within the nation's finest nationwide safety curiosity".

"The coverage two minutes in the past is probably not the coverage two minutes from now", Hirschhorn mentioned.
