Man scales down 19-story building to escape high-rise inferno

Philadelphia man,World news,19 floors building

A Philadelphia man scaled his 19-floor apartment building after a fire broke out, and the agile real-life "Spider-Man" managed to get himself to safety.

Firefighters used a water line to flood the trash chute twice, the AP reported.

The fire may have begun in a trash compactor, according to WPVI.

First responders evacuated the rest of residents from the building which is part of the Philadephia Housing Authority development and houses both families and seniors.

The firefighters had the blaze under control in about an hour.

Emergency responders also went to some individual units to ensure residents there had gotten out safely.

"We did make some forcible entry on some units", said Philadelphia Fire Assistant Chief Harry Bannan.

Police officers on the scene assisted the seemingly uninjured man in climbing over scaffolding at the bottom of the building. His name and further information about him was not disclosed.

In total, seven people needed medical treatment - four civilians and three police officers suffered from smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion. It wasn't clear if any had to be hospitalized.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
