First summer heat wave to bring unsafe conditions into the weekend

Signs of heat stroke include body temperature of 103 degrees or higher; hot, red or dry skin; a fast, strong pulse; confusion and loss of consciousness. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when vehicle interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. If you must be outdoors, stay hydrated and take breaks to cool down as necessary.

Along the northern periphery of the heat dome will be what meteorologists refer to as the "Ring of Fire". Storms that develop over the next few days could bring torrential downpours and gusty winds. In many major population centres, the heat index - how hot it feels factoring in the humidity - is forecast to peak around 110 degrees between Friday and Sunday.

Never leave children or pets in your auto.

The heat index in parts of the D.C. -Maryland-Virginia area will reach 115 degrees over the weekend.

Saturday will also be hot, with the humidex feeling more like 43°C. If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink, ask how much you should drink during hot weather.

For example, the overnight low temperature at New York's Central Park observing station is not forecast to drop below 80 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, and could tie or break the daily records of 82 degrees on both nights.

-Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen. Authorities urged people to check on neighbors, especially those who are high-risk and senior citizens. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Even with the windows cracked open, interior temperatures can rise nearly 20 degrees within 10 minutes.

National Weather Service map - the magenta areas are under an Excessive Heat Warning until Saturday night. Try to rest often in shady areas so your body temperature will have a chance to recover.

"We are about to enter a heat emergency, and must do all we can to keep New Yorkers safe", said Mayor de Blasio, reported the New York Post.

As the climate warms due to human activities, numerous studies show that heat waves such as this one are becoming more common and intense, as well as longer-lasting.

Dangerously high temperatures and humidity could quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke to those outside or without access to air conditioning.
